Cockroach Prevention, Huntsville

Cockroach prevention can be summarized in one word, sanitation. Cockroaches, in particularly German cockroaches, are commensal insects. This means that cockroaches have lived with humans since the beginning of time. They depend on us to provide them with food, water, and shelter. Nevertheless, unlike your pets, you probably didn’t choose to house, feed, and water these six-legged pests.

How Do You Get Cockroaches?

Even the cleanest of spaces can be victims of a cockroach infestation. Cockroaches can be imported or brought in from a laundry list of places, from the grocery store, to lunch boxes, to visitors like friends and family. They may be introduced from backpacks where a cockroach migrated from one backpack to another. If you rent an apartment they may be coming from your neighbor or from a previous resident.

You may bring cockroaches home in rent to own furniture or in used furniture and appliances. Likewise, you may have brought them home in an item purchased from a garage sale, yard sale, or rummage sale. Some species of cockroaches come in from outdoors and may come in as occasional invaders. For example, the mother load of invading cockroaches, the German cockroach, is always brought in from an outside source.

How Do You Prevent Cockroaches From Invading Your Home?

Cockroaches do not have big mouths. One crumb may feed several cockroaches. The biggest defense in cockroach prevention is a strong offense in sanitation. The cleaner a place is, the harder it will be for cockroaches to find what they need to survive: food, water, & shelter. Also, sanitation plays a big role in the process of control and removal. Cockroaches love to be what we call, “belly and back.” This is where their belly and back are both touching something. Cockroaches love tight cracks and spaces. It used to be thought that the reasons why cockroaches were found in magazine stands, back in the day before digitalization of everything, that cockroaches liked to eat the glue. It turns out they just loved the tight space. They don’t like the light. They prefer darkness. The darker, tighter and deeper an area the better.

What Is Cockroach Infestation?

Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal. As previously stated, they prefer to live in tight cracks and in dark and damp places. That being said the perfect cockroach habitat is not a place that humans can easily access. Cockroaches primarily live behind the scenes. The only reason cockroaches are out in the open and light is when populations are so high there isn’t enough room for them behind the scenes.

The general rule of thumb is that when you have 3-5 cockroaches out in the open during the daytime there is 100 behind the scenes for every 1 you actually see. When you get to 10 or more out in the open then you have several thousand behind the scenes. The problem quite literally multiplies from there.
